Together We Grow – Ka Tupu Kotāhi ai Tātou
Kia ora OVS whanau and Caregivers,
At this stage of the term we head into busy ‘camp weeks’ which are always a special feature of our school. In particular I would like to highlight the year 1-2 camp. Very few teachers are brave enough to take on such young campers, and having attended this camp for the day (but not brave enough to stay the night) I have to say it has been a great success…so well done to all the staff and parents. The students were excellently behaved and a huge shout out must go to not only the room 1&2 parents who volunteered, but all those who have offered their support to make our other upcoming camps possible. School camps, the way we do the, is a uniquely ‘kiwi ‘thing and we simply cannot do them without you!
Noho ora mai,
Ka tupuu kotahi ai tatou – TOGETHER WE GROW.
Giving life to our vision: Last week we introduced the meaning of Together and how it represents the social growth of our students. Today I want to explore the second of those three powerful words… WE
Moving into the emotional growth realm, the term ‘WE‘ underscores Manaakitanga, the communal responsibility we bear for each other’s well-being. In the garden analogy that is our school, emotional wellbeing is like a koru, newly growing shoots that require special care and understanding. Through us all living our RURU values, we strive to foster an environment where students feel valued, heard, and supported, providing the fertile ground for emotional resilience to take root. We do this together, all bearing the responsibility of creating a nurturing ecosystem where our tamariki’s emotional growth can flourish.
Ka tupu kotahi ai tatou “Together WE grow.”

Sentence Types – How many do you know?
Did you know that there are 12 sentence types that our OVS students need to learn and master? Students learn them with increasing complexity across year 1-6, with the more difficult sentences being introduced further up the year groups. You might like to help your child/ren get some extra learning mileage by writing some fun super sentences of their own at home.
Our first is the ‘Simple Sentence’

Otaika Community Hall needs you!
Looking for new members to join the Otaika Community Hall Committee. Katriona Bignell, a long standing volunteer/committee member for the past 13 years, will sadly be stepping down at the end of this year. Unfortunately the number of committee members are dwindling, and without enough committee members and volunteers, the Hall may potentially be unavailable for use by the community and general public. If you live locally and are interested in learning more about what’s involved, and/or volunteering a little bit of your time every now and then, please get in touch with Jen and she will pass on your details to Katriona.

Hey!! We’d love a $10,000 sports grant 🙂
From AA Insurance…
“Our Big Little Sponsorship” celebrates our partnership with Eden Park by championing grassroots sports in schools and giving back to the community. For the fifth year, we’re calling for nominations for two deserving primary schools (one in the North Island and one in the South Island) to each win a $10,000 sports grant.
The lucky winning schools will celebrate in style with a visit from former All Black and rugby legend, Keven Mealamu.
We also have a $2,000 and $1,000 sports grant to giveaway to our second and third place schools for each island.
We know how important sport is to Kiwi kids. It teaches fair play, teamwork, builds confidence and keeps them active, but getting the little ones match ready can be expensive.
Nominate your favourite New Zealand primary school today to help them play a little freer!
