2021 Otaika Valley Student Reporting Consultation
This year you will be aware that we have reviewed student reporting and are trialling new and innovative approaches. Recently (1st July), you will have received a mid year written report, alongside many ongoing real time reporting updates through the Seesaw app.
The purpose for real time reporting is designed to…
- help the child
- help the parent/caregiver
- help the teacher
The teachers have given feedback which includes …
… them being able to focus their energy on teaching and learning during Term 2, with the reduced written reporting format.
…them being able to report children’s achievement when it happens – not being delayed by the report writing process.
…reports being written closer to the time they are being sent home.
…Less interruptions to class programmes as assessment is now spread across the year more evenly, rather than at reporting time.
We would now like your feedback on our new reporting approaches.

Parent / teacher interviews
Parent / teacher interviews will be held on the 4th August, which is Wednesday of week 2 next term. These will be 10 minute interview slots to discuss the learning needs of your child. If you have pressing queries or concerns that cannot wait until the interview please contact your child’s teacher and arrange a phone or before/after school chat.
The interview booking form will be sent out early week one, next term.
- Those students who are moving from Room 1 to Room 3 at the beginning of Term 3 will have interviews with Miss Dickens.
- Room 4 will have interviews with Miss Alchin who is back from sabbatical. Any specific queries about Term 2 learning can be followed up later between Miss Alchin and Miss Dickens.
Netball Update
Netball – How It’s Going…
We have 3 fantastic netball teams this year: 1 x Year 3/4 team and 2 x Year 5/6 teams, who have all played 7 games so far. A massive thank you to our wonderful coaches, Kristy Macdonald, Tara McQueen, Anika Clyde, Rachel Dickens and Melanie Coutts. The netball season is flying by so lets find out what’s been happening…
An update from Melanie Coutts – Year 3/4 Coach for “Otaika Valley All Stars”
“The OVS All Stars started playing together last year and have come such a long way. They are a lot more confident a long way. They are a lot more confident this year. They give it their all and try their hardest every week. We have great defense and attack and Ella got 4 goals this week! Thank you to the parents and whanau who have supported our team.”
An update from Rachel Dickens on behalf of Anika Clyde (Coach & past pupil) – Otaika Blues Yr5/6
“Our girls are doing really well competing against some very experienced teams. They rise up to the challenge and their teamwork is fantastic. Lots of skill development and having fun in the process! Each team player has received Player of the Day certificates for their outstanding shooting and defence work. Anika is very proud of the girls, as am I. Keep it up girls!!”
Intersection Reflection/Direction/Correction
Please have a look at my highly accurate drawing of our intersection changes, new lines, signs and speed bump.
The first time I drove from Maungatapere direction CAR C and turned right into our road, I was lucky nobody was behind me. My instant thought was who gives way and I had time to think?
Take note that the fat line in front of CAR C is a give way line. This complicates our senses because it is on a corner. Note the curved broken white lines. CAR C is on a give way sign and would need to give way to CAR A (which in theory is turning left off the new main road – even though it is straight through). This is a straight road that we didn’t indicate left for but we need to now.
CAR A needs to indicate left when approaching the new intersection. This allows CAR B going to town to move off the COMPULSORY STOP SIGN (yellow line) if nothing else is coming.
We have had a few reports of angry driver sign language and lip reading going on. I personally forgot to indicate left as CAR A heading to school just this week. A parent out there will remember me. They were lovely and didn’t provide any visual or lip reading interpreting from me.
This is just a friendly reminder to pretty much indicate what ever you are doing on this road if you are required to. This will help everyone stay safe, have straight vehicle panels and arrive at school and travel home with a smile on their dial. If I have interpreted the road rules incorrectly please let me know.
Kind regards
Terry
