Changes to Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway
Waka Kotahi would like to update you about the Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway project following a Government announcement this morning on the New Zealand Upgrade Programme, which this project is part of.
Waka Kotahi welcomes the Government’s confirmation on the direction and funding commitment to deliver the NZ Upgrade Programme.
It means Waka Kotahi will now be able to fully deliver 16 significant projects across the country that have confirmed scopes, costs and timeframes and are designed to respond better to climate change and housing needs.
To meet climate change and housing objectives, and manage debt responsibly following COVID-19, the Government has decided to make changes to some projects within the NZ Upgrade Programme.
These projects are Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway, Mill Road, Papakura to Drury South stage two and Takitimu North Link stage two.
For Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway, the Government has instructed Waka Kotahi to implement a new option that focuses on safety improvements along the existing state highway, and the construction of a new rail line to Northport.
The new option will support Northland’s economic growth, improve supply chain resilience, reduce emissions and improve road safety.
The current proposal to upgrade State Highway 1 to four lanes will not continue.
Waka Kotahi acknowledges the stress and uncertainty experienced by people with property within the emerging preferred corridor of the four-laning project.
It will take time to work through the next steps and to establish what these changes mean for landowners, Treaty partners, stakeholders and communities.
As a priority, we will be communicating directly with landowners as soon as next steps are known.
