Term 2 – Week 2

10th May 2021

Kia ora koutou,

This term our school wide topic is ‘Tō mātou wāhi – Our Place’.  We look forward to learning about our local history over the next two terms.  There is lots planned.

This week we have a class from Whangarei Primary visiting us on Wednesday to support our journey of learning.  This boys’ senior class is working with us on waiata and haka.  We look forward to their visit.  Whangarei Primary School is part of our COL (Community of School) to support collaboration and knowledge sharing between schools.  Last week we had some teachers here from Maunu school working with our teachers learning about Write that Essay.  This was also highly valuable learning.

The Board of Trustees and PTA (Parent Teacher Group) will now start to ramp up with more actions from now on.  Please read on, as we need community/parent support in a range of ways to make this a great place to be for your children.  You may be able to help…

Board of Trustees focus on nature play and playground

Last Friday I met with two Board members to discuss the next stages for playground development.  Brendan Oakden has done considerable work behind the scenes pre-Covid, and Gareth Bourke who is new to the board, has made a breakthrough in regards to our nature play playground ideas.  Thanks to our previous PTA members we’ve had significant funds raised to support board funds to start the playground. We require some more community feedback on this design before the next stage of applying for grants in order to complete the next stage of the project.  Some new drainage improvements are required, then an extension is planned with new apparatus.  This in itself is exciting.

Part of the plan was to create some nature play on grass areas.  Gareth has made some very exciting deals through his work connections, to get a significant amount of hardwood gum logs to add to children’s play areas.  We want to push go on this before winter sets in.  He is able to achieve this with no cost to the school.  These developed play areas will give the children more areas to explore and make up a range of games.  After Friday’s meeting with Brendan and Gareth I came away really excited for our school.  We welcome your feedback this Friday (see below).

NZ Modern School of Music Piano lessons

Dear parents and caregivers

I have been teaching piano at school since Term 1 and it has been a wonderful experience. I had three students for Term 1 and they all made great progress learning how to play and read music. This term, a fourth student started and I am looking forward to another wonderful term teaching piano to the four young musicians. You are welcome to get more information and enrolment forms from the school office if you are interested.

Have a great term and keep up the music in any way, it is the language of the soul!

Kind regards

Daniel Slabbert
